Nokia 8 will soon support ARCore for augmented reality apps

Google ARcore OnePlus 5T, Xiaomi Mi 8, and Honor 10

ARCore is Google's new augmented reality platform, taking up where Project Tango had left off. Project Tango was killed off in December in favor of its successor: ARCore. ARCore doesn't require any specialized hardware, which vastly simplifies its adoption. It was announced by Google in August 2017, and Google stated at the time that the company's goal was for ARCore support to be delivered to 100 million Android devices from multiple device makers at the end of the preview. ARCore 1.0 was released earlier this year, and Google has continued to add more and more devices to the supported list.

Recently, ARCore 1.3 was released. The OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 6, Nokia 7 Plus, Motorola Moto G5 Plus, LG V35 ThinQ, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have all received ARCore support, and multiple other phones are due to receive it soon, on account of device profiles within the APK. The Essential Phone will also eventually get ARCore support.

Now, Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, has announced that ARCore support is live for the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7 Plus, and the Nokia 8 Sirocco. ARCore support for the Nokia 8 will be enabled soon. Nokia 8 users will therefore soon be able to experiment with the nascent but growing ARCore ecosystem of apps in the Google Play Store.

The Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7 Plus, and the Nokia 8 Sirocco are all part of HMD Global's 2018 device portfolio. All three of these phones were launched in India in April, and the Nokia 8 Sirocco is HMD Global's current flagship device.

The Nokia 8, on the other hand, was released in September 2017 as HMD Global's first ever Nokia-branded flagship phone. Its list of specifications includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 4GB/6GB of RAM paired with 64GB/128GB of storage, 5.3-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) 16:9 IPS display, dual 13MP+13MP rear cameras, and a 3090mAh battery. The phone shipped with stock Android 7.1 Nougat, and it went on to receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update in November. Since then, it has also received the Android 8.1 Oreo update.
